Pretty and Chic Halloween Costumes

It's Halloween again!  Looking back at the last 6 years, I've seen how we evolved when it comes to choosing Mary’s Halloween costumes.

From being a simple pumpkin when she was 4 months old to being a Twilight Sparkle now that she’s 6, I have never imagined how fun it is to prepare for my daughter’s Halloween costumes. But I've also realized how the age of my daughter influenced how much time and money I should spend for a Halloween costume. Now that she’s a school girl and she attends at least 5 Halloween events a year, a costume is no longer a one-time wear thing.  So I've started to think that’s it’s not bad after all to spend a little more on costumes. These days I see to it that her costume is durable enough to withstand multiple washes given all the stains from candies & cakes after each event.  And if I choose wisely, these Halloween pieces can also be worn in other occasions like birthday parties or dress up play dates.  Much more, it is a huge bonus if it can be passed on to her cousins and friends.

Captured last year, Mary was the Fairy in the woods for 2014 Halloween.

Looking back, as a first time mom I remember that I did not prepare ahead for Mary's costume because I was unsure if we would go trick or treating given that she was only 4 months old.  Most of the time, Halloween here in New England is bitterly cold that's why we really had to do some layering.  For the first few years, it was a tradition for us to go to her dad's office to enjoy indoor trick or treating.

At two & three, our choice of her Halloween costume was influenced by our memorable experience that year, where Mary got to watch her first Broadway show.

At 2, Mary was a cat for the Halloween. This is the period when Mary loved the songs from the musical Cats.  She also learned that it was her first Broadway musical show.

At 3, her costume was inspired by Venetian Masquerade.  It was the year that we went to Italy -- our first family European Trip after Mary was born.  She was also wearing the same gown that she used during her birthday party that year with a princess theme.

At 4, I've already started my online kid's boutique - Chichi Mary so our Halloween choices are based on four criteria: beautiful, unique, durable, and flexible to be worn in different occasions.  Given my exposure in kids fashion, I discovered Siaomimi Play during the year when Siaomimi first launched Siaomimi Play, a line of play costumes for boys and girls.  I always admire the work of Hilda Yim, owner & designer of Siaomimi, a Parsons graduate and a former designer of DKNY and Anna Sui.

At 5, I again chose a Siaomimi Play dress, and this time it's a fairy dress.  This particular dress is fun enough for trick or treating, but also classy and chic enough to wear to a fashion gala, as the pics below show.  Most importantly, I didn't hear my daughter complain about being itchy or uncomfortable in her costume.

Mary wore the same fairy dress when we watched the fashion show of my grandfather, Cesar Gaupo, in Manila.

Interestingly, I have seen girls that have used their favorite Siaomimi Play dresses in different occasions like pictorials, birthday parties, dress up plays, and most of the time they simply want to wear their Siaomimi Play dresses on that day without any special reason.

At 6, Mary can't wear enough her ballerina dresses in different styles and concepts.  Here are two of my favorite photos.

We can't deny that it’s always entertaining for us parents to prepare, conceptualize and to actually put these costumes on our kids. Most especially, I salute all those parents who really put on effort to make their own Halloween costumes. When I became a parent, I started to really appreciate the time & effort behind those creative costumes. Needless to say, these are one of those many fun experiences that we parents all cherish!

Happy Halloween!!

Cheers,
Mitshi
